Relive the Journey of John Palliser's Expedition and Late-19th Century Pioneers
There is no shortage of interesting old dwellings in the Missouri Coteau around Mortlach.
In this country, railway ties from the old CPR railway bed make perfectly adequate and durable fence posts.
Transportation networks have evolved significantly since the 19th Century with the establishment of Trans-Canada Highway #1. Cattle subways discreetly allow ranching activities to be carried on with minimal disturbance. Of course rounding cattle up on horseback, in this case, remains somewhat challenging.
This is our host Bill Campbell. He and his family manage the Besant Campground. He brought the cart trail to my attention a few years ago at a tourism product development workshop I facilitated in Mortlach, just on the edge of the Missiouri Coteau.
The old cart trail's outline is visible when sighted at low angle (looking East).
The Moose Jaw to Red Deer River Trail is endowed with mystery and significance.

Join us on August 27 & 28, when the Regina Archaeological Society assists Claude-Jean Harel in conducting a ground survey of the Metis & Pioneer trails on the lands at and surrounding the Besant Trans-Canada Campground at Mortlach, Sask.
Interested members of the public are invited to participate in the survey on the edge of the famous Missouri Coteau
On the evening of August 27th, the RAS will host a barbeque for the Saskatchewan Arxcaheological Society. Coffee and refreshments will be served.
While there is no cost to participate in the survey there are costs to enter the park and for camping:
Entrance fee: $2.00 per person or $5.00 per vehicle.
(buses or minivans will be $2.00 per person)
Note: the $2.00 per person entrance fee is waived for persons camping in the park.
Camping sites: $17.00 non-electric & $22.00 electric
Showers: $1.00
