In view of the increasing popularity of ghost tours; horror-inspired visits about hauntings; ghost stories; fascination with fright and the macabre; urban legends and myths, we thought fantasy could use a dose of reality. Our tours are revisited because the nature of our approach is different than most. Tales of tragedy, crime, murder, mystery, magic, witchcraft and death, offered as tourism products all have linkages with the emerging field of dark or thanatourism -- a form of tourism focusing on death that is fast becoming part of mainstream. Anthropologists are currently exploring this recent phenomenon and the numerous questions it raises about cultural appropriation, contested heritage, experience authenticity, ethics and responsible tourism practices.
