Great Excursions Home May 15, 2008
Canada is, perhaps more than any other country in the world, a real paradise when it comes to wildlife viewing holidays. Canadians themselves enjoy watching, photographing or studying wildlife on trips taken for the purpose of enjoying the rich array of animals natural areas that about north of the 49th parallel. We enjoy this activity while riding horse, or in a specially adapted vehicle, using spotting scopes or binoculars. Such experiences. You will find below a selection of some of the best holidays we can offer.

I Walked with Polar Bears (and saw Belugas)

4 Days/3 Nights

To the discerning nature lover, spring and summer in Churchill yield a bounty of natural wonders. 3000 beluga whales and four major biomes converge on the Churchill region: the marine, the boreal, tundra and the taiga, each providing habitat for animals and plants unique to their systems. The area is rich also in human history. Dene and Inuit people have occupied this land for thousands of years. Churchill was also the staging area for fur traders and explorers since the 17th century. The result is a virtual smorgasborg of the natural world and culture!

Canada to South East Alaska Coastal Cruising Aventure

9, 10 and 11-Day Trips

Experience Alaska as few can ever do! Watch as a 40-ton humpback whale launches itself out of the ocean in Frederick Sound, turns gracefully in the air, then lands on its back in a thunderous cascade of water; see brown bears fishing for salmon in a rushing river; float among icebergs as a part of a glacier tumbles into the sea. Nothing compares to an enormous whale and her calf surfacing along side your boat and blowing geysers of mist into the air. Visit a bear-viewing platform and watch grizzlies and eagles feed on spawning salmon. Admiralty Island National Monument has more brown bears and eagles per square mile than anywhere in North America, for that matter, the world. In addition to the wildlife, Southeast Alaska has been home to Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian natives for thousands of years, and their cultures will astound, inform and entertain.

Gwaii Haanas - Queen Charlotte Islands Sailing Adventure in Canada

8 or 9 Days

Sixty miles off the coast of northern British Columbia, a group of islands emerge from the ocean mist like something out of a marvellous dream. Haida Gwaii, or the Queen Charlotte Islands, have often been referred to as Canada’s Galapagos Islands, and for good reason. They boast an amazing biodiversity, including moss-draped old-growth sitka spruce, hemlock, and cedar forests, one quarter of British Columbia’s nesting sea birds, one third of its peregrine falcons, a host of marine mammals such as whales and sea lions, and some flora and fauna that are found nowhere else in the world. They also contain a rich cultural legacy that dates back thousands of years and has warranted designation as a United Nations World Heritage Site. Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve, called “place of wonder” by the Haida First Nation, is the home of an ancient Haida village called Ninstints. Surrounded by towering old-growth forests, its weathered and listing totem poles facing out to the sea, Ninstints is like a world forgotten by time.

Last Mountain Lake National Wildlife Area: Viewing Whooping Cranes in Canada

1 day

We hate to brag but we have, a two-hour drive north of Regina the oldest bird sanctuary in North America... serious! Last Mountain Lake National Wildlife Area was born in 1887. And it happens to be the best place in the world for whooping crane viewing during fall migration, right here in Canada. The tallest bird in the world is also one of the rarest and most spectacular. The National Wildlife Area encompasses over 15,000 hectares of upland and wetland habitat. Up to 50,000 sandhill cranes, 400,000 geese and several hundred thousand ducks may be observed there when migration peaks. Forget what you read in the guide books, Last Mountain Lake is North America's busiest airport.

The Rut is On in Canada's Boreal Forest Wildlife Viewing Vacation

6 Days (End of August to Mid-October)

This package centers around the natural urge of our Saskatchewan ungulates to propagate their species. It is a time when the big bulls throw a bit of caution to the wind. There is a nip in the air and the smells of fall are pungent. It is great to be alive, your legs automatically go into motion ready to explore the wilderness.
