Bloodvein River Canoeing Adventure: Discover the very heart of the boreal forest

8 Days or 15 Days

Bloodvein River is a pristine river on the East side of Lake Winnipeg, in Manitoba, Canada, with no logging roads nearby. Many native locals and tourists enjoy canoeing and fishing in this river, often a priceless adventure in the heart of the boreal forest.

Swimming in this river is pleasant in the summer because of the warmer water compared to mountain stream fed rivers. First Nation peoples have used the river for centuries, and petroglyphs can be found on some shoreline cliffs.

This very clean and warm water river drains from the Canadian Shield into Lake Winnipeg. It will potentially be a part of a United Nations World Heritage Site and park.

How this trip makes a difference:

This trip operation was awarded a Sustainable Development Innovation Fund grant from the Province of Manitoba to develop infrastructure to facilitate cultural exchanges in the community.

Our work is ongoing with all the East side of Lake Winnipeg, the watershed of the Bloodvein River with the Boreal Heritage Initiative. The Boreal Heritage Initiative is the name of the campaign to have the East Side of Lake Winnipeg designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The east side of Lake Winnipeg and our principal operating area is considered to be one of the last remaining expanses of pristine boreal forest. This area is on the short list of the United Nations which has yet to delegate a representation of boreal forest under it’s World Heritage Site program. With community supporting the project it is up to government to finalise the approval process.

The operator, in partnership with the Boreal Forest Network www.borealnet.org hosts educational and media tours down the Bloodvein River in an effort to raise awareness about the area.

From the Canadian Heritage Rivers System website:

Named, perhaps, for the red granite running through the bedrock, the Bloodvein slashes through the Canadian Shield, tumbling over boulder-strewn rapids and surging through narrow gorges on its journey to Lake Winnipeg. Endless forests of jack pine... wild rice marshes...bald eagles... black bear... walleye and northern pike eager to strike...

... all await the intrepid wilderness canoeist. Red ochre pictographs of bison, human figures, hands and power symbols grace overhanging rock faces- ancient murals that speak of earlier river travellers. The Bloodvein – deep in the heart of the land.
