Canoe Trips in Canada: The MacLennon Lake Area
5 Days
The MacLennan Lake area is a relatively small region, only about 30 kilometres square. Yet it contains hundreds of lakes that are connected with short portages. The water in these island filled lakes is crystal clear. The shoreline is either rugged rock or low and marshy. Although to the average person, the rocks around McLennan may look like granite, they are actually derived from sedimentary rocks that were heated and deformed to become metamorphosed rocks, which geologists refer to as meta-arkose. An arkose is a type of sandstone composed mainly of quartz and feldspar.
The area is remarkably beautiful. Thick forest covers the land. black spruce is the most common, but Jack pine is also quite prevalent as well. In some areas the forest is made up of aspen and birch. The MacLennan Lake area has beautiful campsites and great swimming. All this makes for an awesome region to take a canoe trip.
The region has so many lakes and is so interconnected, one could spend many summers exploring. This is wilderness canoeing at it’s best! Paddling through lakes that are so calm the shoreline is mirrored perfectly is a common occurrence. In the evening you may be serenaded by loons as northern lights dance overhead. The MacLennan Lake area is magic. You’ll want to come back many times to continue your explorations.
How does this trip make a difference:
Your canoe trip in the MacLennan Lake area will help support the local, northern Saskatchewan economy. This operation employs many local people – both native and non-native. As much as possible, supplies and other needs are purchased locally. We are involved in the local community government and community events. Coming on this canoe trip will help us continue to do these things.
The MacLennan Lake area is very special. It is often called the Churchill uplands. Other than a few cottages the area has remained untouched by industry. Recently, with the increase in gold prices, gold exploration has dramatically increased in the region. This trip will be used to help monitor the activities of gold exploration companies in the area. We are working along with CPAWS through our partners to help monitor these activities. A portion of the proceeds from this trip will go towards supporting CPAWS. CPAWS is the only environmental organization working to protect this region of northern Saskatchewan
