Explore Canada's Historic Churchill River System on a canoeing Holiday
7 days / 6 nights
Is your imagination held captive by images of birchbark canoes and the songs of voyageurs drifting across the water? Here is your ultimate opportunity to travel the most important waterway in Northern Saskatchewan's history on a canoeing holiday. We'll take you along as we bring history alive on the river most loved by the First People who have lived here for thousands of years, by the fur traders and by today's recreational paddlers who recognize the Churchill as one of the greatest canoeing rivers in the world.
During the day you'll visit rock painting sites and paddle through the wide expanses and narrow swift channels of this Shield river, and at night we'll share the trip logs and stories of those who came before. Great history, great scenery, great rapids, great river.

Day 2 This entire day will be spent on Black Bear Island Lake. This is one of the prettiest lakes on the Churchill River chain of lakes. The lake is so full of islands one is never far from shore. There are numerous ancient rock painting sites along the lake. These are well worth stopping at to examine. You will camp on a small island near the east end of the lake.
Day 3 The group would portage around Birch Rapids. If the group is so inclined they could play in the rapids below the portage. They could then shoot a minor rapid where the water flows into Trout Lake. There is a beautiful place to camp on an island at the south end of Trout Lake.
Day 4 In the morning the group would then paddle to the north end of Trout Lake and portage around Trout Rapids. Below this there are several minor rapids to shoot and a small lake to cross before setting up camp at Rock Trout Rapids.
Day 5 Between Rock Trout Rapids and Nepew Lake is a small lake and are 3 or 4 minor rapids to shoot. Where the river flows into Nepew Lake is a beautiful lunch spot. The group would then paddle to the east end of Nepew Lake and set up camp on a high look out hill.
Day 6 In the morning you would float through the fast water connecting Nepew to Hayman Lake. The group would soon arrive at the Sluice Falls portage. This is long portage. Shortly after this portage is a perfect campsite at Corner Rapids. There are numerous rapids in which to play in this area.
Day 7 From Corner Rapids you would shoot through numerous minor rapids to Devil Lake. From Devil Lake you would either run or portage Otter Rapids, then paddle the last few kilometers to Missinipe.
