Great Sand Hills Expedition into Plains Back Country Sand Dunes Environment

4 days / 3 nights

This vast ecologically sensitive zone of active sand dunes ranging between 15 and 25 meters in height sits in a Chinook area and is subject to strong West and North West winds that keep the dunes moving by as much as 4 meters a year.

Bordering on the spectacular South Saskatchewan River, this is really an island of dry mixed prairie in the middle of the grain belt, mostly encompassed by private ranch land. The Sand Hills sustain a large population of mule deer, antelope, sharp tail grouse and bank swallows. Some say even cougars are at large.

Some areas show an unusual savannah of widely spaced cottonwoods on sandy flats. Dunes in this region have extensive cover of silver sagebrush, accompanied by typical dune grassland. In low lying areas aspen and river birch provide an oasis of shade in this rugged landscape.

Day 1

After a brief introduction to this adventure - during the course of which we will look at the path we will follow - we will depart from Regina and travel on the Trans Canada Highway heading west to the Chaplin Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve. After lunch, and a hike along the shore up to the observation tower. We will drive to Swift Current and continue northward to Saskatchewan Landing Provincial Park, where we will pitch our tent for the night, have dinner, go for a swim or a hike in the ravines of the South Saskatchewan River Valley.

Day 2

Shortly after a hearty breakfast we will cross the river and drive to Great Sand Hills country. We will stop at the Sand Hills Museum at Sceptre, and then our journey into the hills will begin. We end the day at a guest ranch on the north shore of the fast flowing South Saskatchewan River, known in this area for its concentration of songbirds.

Day 3

Crossing the river in the morning, we will come to Cabri Regional Park for another day of hiking, wildlife viewing and camping along the southern shore of this glacial river valley.

Day 4

On our way back to Regina, we will take another look at life around the Chaplin Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve, just long enough to allow us to return to Regina for the evening.

Package includes: Tents, camping equipment, all home-cooked meals including wine and other refreshments, fees, applicable taxes, professional guide and all transportation from point of departure to point of return. Sleeping bags not included.
