Dog Mushing in Saskatchewan: Huskies, Moose and Timberwolf Serenade

6 Days (Mid-November to Mid-March)

This experience centres around learning how to "mush" or drive dogs. Experience indicates that most people like their first several rides on the dogsled but then the adventurous want more! They want to drive the team and thus this package was born.

It runs for a week with no pressure or grading, just the thrill of working with Siberian Huskies in Saskatchewan’s grand wilderness.

We realize that some dog-sledding operations have guests driving dogs within the first hour.   We believe that with the more gradual approach, you are truly learning and gain the dogs' trust rather then just “driving them”.  The “team” is awaiting - come join us!

About Your Guide

David Weiman, Nature Interpreter and Guide

David has, throughout his life, combined professional work with a personal love for the Boreal and Parkland regions.

A specialist in renewable resource technology, he left a career as a conservation officer to open an outdoor adventure store, but soon found he needed to be in the real outdoors again.

Thus, Sawyer Lake Adventures evolved providing you the opportunity to explore and appreciate the Parkland Boreal Forest. David brings familiarity with these ecosystems, and his enthusiasm introduces you to its magic.

"These regions never fail to intrigue me. Allow me to share its mystery with you."

Day 1

You arrive in time for lunch. After a nourishing meal of home-cooked favorites we meet the dogs individually, giving you a chance to get acquainted with your new friends. We go through some of the equipment and safety concerns. You then help with harnessing the dogs and you go for a ride. During the ride we have you take notice of the driving techniques and the language used. And yes, the ride is just plain fun.

Day 2

This is the day of transition where your guide becomes the passenger and you graduate to the back of the sled. Your guide will still give the commands for the first while but slowly you take over.

Day 3

By this time most folks are able to do a short solo run; gaining enough confidence for a longer journey the next day.  After another fine leisurely meal in the warmth of the spacious lodge, time is spent talking about the ecology of the area.

Sleep will come easy after a great day in the outdoors.

Day 4

Today, we harness up two teams with you following behind the guide’s team. You are now ready to explore the boreal forest on an extended trip. The thrill of having your own working team brings a sense of joy and accomplishment.

Day 5

Another extended trip deep into the boreal is planned with lunch over an open fire. An overnight stay at a local trapper’s cabin is an option, opening a whole new world for you. You could be serenaded by timberwolves!

Day 6

The morning is left to your imagination. Perhaps you may want to try ski-joring with one of the dogs, cross-country skiing in the back country, ride one of the horses, go for a horse-sleigh ride, or snowshoe. Maybe you better come for two weeks!

In any case, we believe this trip will be a life-long memory and you will take home a feeling of true accomplishment.
