Trapline Trails Trapper-Themed Holiday in Saskatchewan, Canada

6 Days

This trapline experience takes place in the Porcupine Provincial Park in the heart of the Boreal forest of Saskatchewan. This particular area has a wide diversity of habitat thus allowing for a large number species of animals to live here.

Long hair furbearers as the fox, fisher, timber wolves  as well as short hair species as weasel, otter and others live in the area. In total the area boasts of eighteen different fur bearing animals that test the knowledge of the trapper.

This package allows you to become part of the trapping experience. We combine the use of a snowmobile (to lay down the trail and initial sets) and then the follow-up use of dogsled pulled by Siberian Huskies.  Following is a rough outline of the activities involved in this package.

Day 1

You arrive in time for a home-cooked lunch favorites. After a fortifying meal you go out to meet the dogs, after all they will be your means of transportation part of the week. You are taken to the trapping centre to review the humane traps used  and to get a better understanding of trapping process. After supper maps are pulled out to give you a “better feeling” for the area.

Day 2

Depending on the weather and the stage the trapping cycle is in, either the snowmobile or dogsled is prepared to head out mid-morning.  It is important to realize that this is a working trapline that is sustainable in nature. We cannot change the flow of the season but rather work with nature to harvest the animals.

Day 3

Again we head out to both make new sets and to check traps already put out. At times it can be difficult to move about if there is lots of snow or floodwater. It is hard to say what nature “hands out” but part of the feeling of accomplishment is to prevail despite weather challenges. There is a good chance that later that afternoon or in the evening you will be involved in your first animal skinning.

Day 4

The usual day of trapping starts out with many side adventures that can happen. One of the Siberians ties into a porcupine and quills need to be pulled out. A new trail needs to be cleared out. A sighting of a moose crossing in front of the dogs makes your day. It is the unknown and the feeling of working within those parameters that make this package special

Day 5

By this time you have not only skinned several species of animals but also have learned to “dress” them. We want to do the best job possible to prepare these furs for market. It is important to respect each animal harvested. While preparing the furbearers much talk is made about the sustainable harvest of the wild animals. At times it may mean not trapping a certain species at all for period of time.

Day 6

It is time to say good-bye to the Boreal forest and the trapline. Each dog is thanked for  his/her effort as is  the cook  who has worked hard to make wholesome tasty meals. It is also time to make the decision which furs you would like to take along home if you so desire. We will help you with the necessary permits.
We are sure those furs will bring back many a memory over the years.

Note: Some folks prefer to bring their skiis and at times we check the trapline with skiis, pulk and Siberians.

Enjoy, appreciate and conserve the outdoors!
