Day 1

The Qu'Appelle River system certainly is one of the most fascinating in the Great Plains. The river takes its source at the South Saskatchewan River and crosses almost the entire province until it reaches the Assiniboine River at the Manitoba-Saskatchewan border.

What gives the Qu'Appelle its evocative character surely is the valley through which it meanders its way from West to East. Throughout the history of the valley's human occupation, the river has provided sustenance to aboriginal people and European settlers alike, through fishing and the famed buffalo hunting activities to which it owes its name.

The whole valley bears witness to past human use through the variety of archaeological sites that have been identified in the area, both prehistoric and historic.

The valley itself has been modified by humans because of agricultural and recreational needs, through irrigation projects, dikes and wetland mitigation initiatives.

Our journey will take us through some of the most fascinating landscapes in the Plains on an authentic adventure of human adaptations through the ages that will leave no-one indifferent. We will interpret ancient and modern day artifacts and gain a new perspective on the evolution of human societies in our part of the world.
